How often do you need to change your cars oil?

The standard was to change your oil every 3,000 miles. Now I hear every 5,000 miles. I just had my oil changed--after 5,000 miles and

am not sure if I wasted my money as checking the dipstick the oil

was as clear as cooking oil after 5,000 miles?
