How many miles safe is it to drive after a suggested oil change?

Is it safe for me to drive 200 miles tonight without an oil change? How many miles safe is it to drive after a suggested oil change?certainly, you will be fine...try to have it changed between 3000 and 4000How many miles safe is it to drive after a suggested oil change?A few hundred miles isn't going to hurt anything. It would take long term, consistent abuse to do real damage to your car. If you want to consider extended drain intervals, which can save money, use a good quality synthetic oil like Amsoil.

  • What can I do about a faulty oil change?

I just got an oil change on my van at Wal-Mart. The van was driving with no problem before then, but now the engine's revving up on it's own and not even pushing the van. There's a slight possibility that there was something else wrong with it, but considering the way it's been driving before then, I doubt it. How can I prove that it was the fault of the automotive techs at Wal-Mart and receive compensation for repairs and legal fees if the case needs to be taken to court? What can I do about a faulty oil change? It depends on the state you are in. In Michigan you are suppose to try to settle any dispute with the repair facility, if a conclusion cannot be made there, there is a department of the Secretary of State that will arbitrate a settlement. My answer is go back to Walmart and if they don't make it right then go to the Secretary of State or its equivalent in your state and register a complaintWhat can I do about a faulty oil change?Unless you have no oil at all, none of your symptoms would be due to an oil change!

Sounds like you have a transmission issue! What can I do about a faulty oil change?Never go to Wal-mart again. They ****-up tons of cars. What can I do about a faulty oil change?your problem has nothing to do with the oil change. You might check the spring return on the accelerator to see if it is broken but that still has nothing to do with oil change. What can I do about a faulty oil change? You can't. First of all, there is no indication that what Walmart employees did is responsible for your van running poorly. An oil change is pretty straight-forward, so I doubt this is when something happened.

And in all honesty, you can't even change your own oil, if you were to go to a judge or a lawyer with this claim, they'd ask how you know, especially if you're not mechanically inclined. It's going to take more than a hunch and a coincidence to convince someone Walmart is responsible. What can I do about a faulty oil change? You don't give the age of your van ... does it have an APP (Accelerator pedal position) sensor?

I see alot of cars in my job at [a nationally known rental agency] and the symptoms you describe have come up a couple of times, in both cases it was this sensor.

It might just be that the oil change was a coincidence! Wal-Mart may not be the problem! Have your mechanic give your van the once over, including computer diagnostics (keep the receipt, just in case I'm wrong) if the sensor is there (and bad) have it changed and see if the problem goes away! What can I do about a faulty oil change?Oil change problem is unlikely -- have it checked out by a mechanic.

How often should I oil change?

I know the standard answer is every 3000 miles or 3 months. But I've heard that newer cars or highway miles are different. If I put 1000 miles a week on my 98 Toyota - mostly highway, do I really need to change my oil every 3 weeks? What about the synthetic oil? If I used that, how often should I change my oil?

Thanks! How often should I oil change?your toyota is listed at 5-7000 miles in those conditions... synthetic oil can about double your change interval, provide better MPG and protection for your motor. i generally don't go beyond 6K even with synthetic although i know you can.

WHY? well, if you change your oil consistent at decent intervals, you can turn a car into a million mile car.How often should I oil change? everyone recommends every 3,000 miles but realistically you can go at least to 7000 miles every oil change. How often should I oil change?I usually get an oil change every 6 months, but i also constanly check the oil to see if its dirty. How often should I oil change?popular question here..... use this as a guide for synthetic oil.

How often do I have to change the oil for a 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i?

I've looked in the owner's manual, maintenance and warranty manual and online but no luck -- the manual only mentions the 3.0 and 3.6. I found somewhere that the initial oil change takes place at 7,500 miles or 7.5 months but no clue how frequently after that.

No guesstimates please and provide your source if possible. How often do I have to change the oil for a 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i?many vehicle manufacturers are extending their recommended service intervals to 5,000 or 7500 miles these days, but as a prfessional mechanic I still recommend an oil change every 3000 miles or 3 months on ALL makes and models. These extended service intervals are used as a selling point on new models, and I have not yet seen any evidence that the vehicles are actually equipped to handle this over thier lifetime of use. Also, if you check the manufacturer service schedule you will notice it differs based on wheter you fall under the %26quot;normal%26quot; or %26quot;severe%26quot; driveing categories. The %26quot;normal%26quot; category is generally reserved for people who almost never drive their car and 80-90 percent of actual vehicle owners fall under the %26quot;severe%26quot; driving schedule, which generally still is a recommended 3000 mile or 3 month service interval. How often do I have to change the oil for a 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i?Your best source for that information is your Owner Manual but the Edmunds maintenance guide will also have the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule (use the drop-down menu to select your year, make, model, engine, etc):

Do you have to wait long for an oil change at a mom and pop mechanic?

I usually go to places like Jiffylube to get an oil change where I don't have to wait long. How long do I have to wait at one of these mom and pop mechanics. Usually, I see a lot of cars stuffed outside their garage. So do I have to wait long and come back the next day?Do you have to wait long for an oil change at a mom and pop mechanic?make an appointment and you should get in quickly.Do you have to wait long for an oil change at a mom and pop mechanic?Yeah, I'd leave it for a couple days.Do you have to wait long for an oil change at a mom and pop mechanic?please if you want an oil change, ill do it in 10 or less if you want it done right, 20 minutes. if you want it done today, ill do it but not sure if i can find the filter wrench. the cars you see are cars that need minor to major r%26amp;r and they dont have anything to do with you other than if the bays are currently in use. usa survived way longer than with jiffylube.support mom and pop by all means, they can even give you references. oil change might cost more, but i guarantee that if your a regular customer your engine work will get discounted somewhat for being a good customer. break it ill smile and so will you. heck my labor rate for my shop is less than $30 an hour. i work flat rate and havent seen a flat rate manual in 20 yrs..Do you have to wait long for an oil change at a mom and pop mechanic?I would call the shop directly and ask. My own shop is very busy, but if a customer asks I can usually work in a waiter oil change. It does depend on the time of day and the work load, though, so only the shop can adequately answer your question.Do you have to wait long for an oil change at a mom and pop mechanic?I would trust a mom and pop or any new car dealer before I'd ever consider the non-mechanics at any chain fast oil change shop.

Have you ever watched the oil being drained from your crankcase? How many minutes do you feel the crankcase needs to drain? Is the motor hot or cold? What brand of oil filters do they use? Are you fussy about the brand of motor oil? Are you sure they poured the right viscosity back in?

You can't beat yourself if you do your own oil changes. You're the boss. Hot oil drains faster. You can let it drain for as long as you want (longer is better.) Pick a good brand of oil filter instead of no-name junk at fast oil change places. You have the opportunity to chose any brand of motor oil of the correct viscosity.

Any new car dealer would be a good second choice.

Jiffy Lube just went belly-up in our town. We still have Mobil, Quaker State, Valvoline and Havoline fast oil change joints.

  • How difficult is it to change my own oil?

I would like to perform a simple driveway oil change. I have a 2003 Chrysler 300m. I am 16yr. old and plenty of friends to help if needed. I am wondering how difficult it is to do?How difficult is it to change my own oil?Required items:

    Oil drain pan

New oil filter (Verify that the filter is specifically for your model vehicle, engine)

5 qts oil (check the owners manual for the type of oil)

    Jack and jack stands

    Wheel chocks

Open end wench or crescent wrench

    Oil Filter wrench

Funnel, if you are sloppy pouring oil, or if you are dealing with the 5qt bottles of oil.

    Rags or paper towels

    Tips:

Do Not Block your only other means of transportation while you do this job. You could need a ride if things go wrong.

    Remember: Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosey.

Your local car parts store may provide a place to rid yourself of the old oil.

    Procedure:

Locate the oil filter. (Depending on it's location, you may be able to remove it from the top rather than from underneath the vehicle)

    Chock the rear wheels

Raise the vehicle using a jack, only enough to place the jack stand and access the oil drain plug, and filter.

Place the oil drain pan under the vehicle.

Remove the oil drain plug, ensure that the drain pan is placed to catch the oil.

Remove the oil filter, ensure that the drain pan is placed to catch the oil. You will need the filter wrench for this

Install the new filter. Verify that the new filter is correct. My way is to take the old oil filter and the new one and touch the rubber gaskets of the two together. This accomplishes two things: 1) verifies that the gasket is correct 2) applies a small amount of oil onto the new filter gasket.

Tighten the filter hand tight. My preference is to use the filter wrench and give it an extra quarter turn.

Reinstall the oil drain plug. wipe off any dripping oil.

    Refill with oil:

Remove the oil filler cap, put in 3 qts of oil. While the oil is going in keep an eye under the car for signs of a leak

Check the oil level. Remove the dip stick, wipe it clean, reinsert and remove it again, it should show a qt or more low, if so, add another qt and check the level again. The level should be less than a qt low.

Replace the dipstick and oil filler cap. Again check for leaks.

Start the engine, the oil light will stay on for generally 10 - 30 sec. IF THE OIL LIGHT IS STILL ON, TURN THE ENGINE OFF. Check under the car for signs of a leak. Allow the engine to run for about one minute, if all is going as planned. Turn the engine off, check the oil level. It should be approx 1 qt low. If so add the 5th qt of oil.

Good LuckHow difficult is it to change my own oil?depends on how high your car is other then that if you know what to do it is easyHow difficult is it to change my own oil?Not that hard. Make sure you replace the washer for the drain plug, and make sure the new filter has a coating of clean oil on the gasket. Also, make sure the new filter is hand tightened down, do not use the filter wrench to tighten it.How difficult is it to change my own oil?it is just about the most basic car maintenance procedure there is.

Just search the internet or find a tutorial or 2 on the supplies and procedures you need to do.

Be sure you have everything you need before starting, otherwise you will make things a lot harder then it needs to be.How difficult is it to change my own oil? It's simple enough. You just have to make sure you know where to take the old oil. You don't dump it in the gutter or down the drain. How difficult is it to change my own oil?jack or put it on ramps don't forget to put stand under it when using hydraulic jack. locate oil pan pull the plug. when it starts drizzling out run the engine for ten seconds and immediately shut it off. however this is my procedure for an old Chevy truck and running low oil may damage your more precision engine. take your wrench to the filter if this fails shove a screwdriver through the oil filter and use it as leverage. when putting on your new filter rub some old oil on the new filters seal. tighten this as tight as you can by hand. then return the plug to the pan and add your oil through the filler tube not the dipstick.

good luckHow difficult is it to change my own oil?It is really quite easy. You will need to buy a few things first. A set of Ramps (versus using a jack which can fall and drop the car on you) which you can get at Wal-Mart, Pep Boys or almost any Auto Parts Store. Or you can buy Jack Stands also although the ramps are faster and take less time. A filter removal tool, also available in the same places, and a socket that is the exact size of the drain plug in your oil pan. Adjustable wrenches end up rounding the corners on the plug and making it useless. An Oil Drain Pan. A new oil filter and 5 quarts of oil which meets your owners manual recommendations. Also a mechanics creeper to roll under the car on.

You want the engine warmed up so the oil flows more freely, plus it will drain better but be careful you do not burn yourself on the oil.

Drive up on the ramps without running off the front of them. Set your parking brake and also put a block of wood or rubber wheel chalk behind one of the rear tires. Take your drain pan with you, and roll under the car. Put the drain pan under the oil pan plug, loosen it and take it out being careful not to drop it into the oil and to try to keep from letting the oil run down your arm and burn you. The plug should have either a nylon or fabric washer (do not loose it), although some just have a wide shoulder and seal metal to metal. After it stops dripping, replace the plug and tighten it snugly. Then slide your pan under the oil filter, you may want to dump the oil into another container first so the pan is empty again. Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter and unscrew it. It will be hot because it is full of oil. Use a rag or something to keep from burning yourself again. Unscrew it and turn it upside down in the pan so it can drain. With a rag wipe off the ring around where the filter screws on. Take some clean oil on your finger and rub it around the rubber gasket on the new filter. Now thread the new filter on and tighten as tight as you can with your hands. Now take the filter wrench and put it on as close to the top edge as you can and turn it about 1/2 turn more. Tighten is clockwise and loosen is counterclockwise as you are looking up at it.

    righty tighty, lefty loosey.

Now that you have the plug in and your new filter on, get out from under the car and pour 4 quarts of new oil into your engine. (Normally takes 5 quarts with filter) Start it up and let it idle and go back under the car with it running to check for any oil leaks. If no leaks, get out, back the car off of the ramps. Removing the wheel block first. When it is on flat ground, shut it off wait a few minutes then check the dipstick. It should be on the low mark with is one (1) quart. Add the 5th quart of oil and you are finished. Write your mileage and the date down so you remember when you did it. You may also want to buy a Grease gun, and some grease cartridges so that you can also lube your car. If you are doing your own oil changes and not having it done at an oil change facility you car will not get greased unless you grease it. You should grease it everytime you change the oil. You can find do-it-yourself manuals to cover your car at auto parts stores, and they will show you where the grease fittings are. It is a sizeable investment when you first buy everything you need, but by the 3rd or 4th oil change, it will have all been paid for.How difficult is it to change my own oil? It's not too difficult if you are not scared to get under the car. Just lift the car up on jack and secure with jack stands or spare wheels.

Make sure you have the proper size spanner or ratchet/socket to open the drain plug. The drain plug is in oil sump pan, which is usually black in color. You might also consider buying a filter opener, and make sure you match the new filter with the old one to make sure you got the right one. And clean the surface before putting the new filter and smear fresh oil on gasket of new filter before fitting in. Do not over tighten the filter; hand tighten it and then quarter to half a turn with filter gripping tool would do.

Get the car back on ground and fill the oil, start the engine, run for five minutes check for leakages and let the engine cool for 3 minutes, check the level and top up if required. Do not overfill.

Best time to drain the oil is when engine is moderately warm. Use gloves and safety glasses, ask a friend to watch but do not touch the car while you are under the car.How difficult is it to change my own oil?Step 1:buy oil and a filter (as well as an oil drain pan if you don't own one) (ask the salesperson to find out how many quarts you need if you're not sure, I also recommend substituting a quart with Lucas Oil Stabilizer)

Step 2: Locate and open the oil cap on your engine

Step 3: jack your vehicle up

Step 4: Locate the oil drain plug at the back of the oil pan (underneath the engine), position the oil drain pan below it and slightly back (the oil will have some pressure behind it at first from the weight of the rest of the oil). Remove the drain plug and wait until the oil only drips out, then replace the drain plug.

Step 5: locate and remove the oil filter (usually located adjacent to the oil pan on the driver's side, an oil filter wrench may be required. Place the oil drain pan below it before removing it as it will leak some oil when removed)

Step 6: replace new filter and hand tighten ONLY.

Step 7: lower vehicle from jack and refill engine with oil (goes in the oil cap you removed at the beginning), and replace the oil cap. Run the engine for 5 seconds to circulate new oil, then check the dipstick (normally yellow. Remove, wipe off, replace then remove again to check oil level) and if its at the 'full' mark, you're done.

Does anybody know how often we should oil change our car?

i have a 99 honda civic and I was wondering how often should i take my car to oil change %26amp; what happen if i miss one time of oil change? Is that bad for my car? thanks.Does anybody know how often we should oil change our car?you don't have to change it every 3 months or 3,000 miles. you have an older car, so I'm assuming you have high mileage on it. make sure you get the high mileage oil put in.Does anybody know how often we should oil change our car?they say every 3,000 miles. If you never change it the oil will get dirty and fail causing major engine damage. I don't think I have it done every 3,000 miles myself but do it about 2-3 times a year.Does anybody know how often we should oil change our car?i change my oil every 3 months or 3000 miles. some people do theirs for a longer time like 6 months or 6000 miles. the more frequent the better. the older the oil, the more contaminants it will obtain. dirty oil will harm your engine, costing more to fix it later on.Does anybody know how often we should oil change our car?If you take frequent short trips or spend a lot of time ideling in stop and go traffic change your oil every 3 thousand miles. However if you drive mainly on the highways at constant steady speeds you can wait until 75 hundred miles or so.Does anybody know how often we should oil change our car?every 3, 000 miles, or every three months which ever comes first, but i let mine go to 5,000 miles and have never had a problem

its not bad for your car o miss one time, my grandfather used to go for 8,000 miles, and he never once had a problem with any of his vehicles

hope this helpedDoes anybody know how often we should oil change our car?I do mine once a year or every 12000 miles Try not to miss it as oil breaks down and loses its efficiencyDoes anybody know how often we should oil change our car?Look, what matters is the amount of oil in the engine more than when it was last changed

The wear from old oil is nothing compared to what happens when it runs low. So if you do nothing else just topping up the oil will avoid a breakdown (never trust the oil warning light but if it comes on, ****!)

I change the oil about once a year which is always a good feeling

To save money I don't bother changing the oil filter. My theory is if the engine's that bad then a new oil filter won't do any good ;)

Checking the gearbox oil is worth doing on a new car or after repairs in the drivetrain.

So if you miss oil change is nothing, as long as level is enough in the engine. Change every 6,000 miles or every year, costs 10 / $20 to do this yourselfDoes anybody know how often we should oil change our car?I think it's hype to change oil every 3000 miles. I have never wasted that much oil in my life of driving. Just look at the oil. If it looks good, it probably is good. If it is gummy, smells burnt , stuff like that, it's probably bad. I had a Toyota truck once, '92 with a V-6. I changed the oil about every 15 to 20 thousand miles. It had 367,000 miles when I sold it. I ran PERFECT. No smoke, great power. But, I always kept it full!!! Though topping off the oil was rare.Does anybody know how often we should oil change our car?Guessing 20,000 per-year=160,000 Close? stay right 3 and 3 (3 Months/3,00 miles which ever comes first) if you think you should go to a heavier oil, try not to go above 15W-40.

How often do I REALLY need an oil change?

The stickers always say to get an oil change every 3000 miles. But how often is it truly necessary? My car is in very good condition and relatively new, a 2003.How often do I REALLY need an oil change?Every 3000 or less. It's the best way to keep your vehicle running well, no matter the age of your car.How often do I REALLY need an oil change?according to Consumer Reports:

%26quot;If you think you're saving money by skipping an oil change, think again. Missing even one oil change can accelerate premature engine wear and cause engine damage, reducing long term car reliability.

When seeking long term car reliability, consider using what might be called the severe- or extreme-use maintenance schedule in your manual. Typically, drivers who need to follow such a schedule do a lot of city driving, live in a hot or cold climate or near the ocean, make a lot of short trips, tow a trailer, or drive in dusty conditions. If that sounds like it includes a lot of drivers, it does.

The difference between the regular maintenance and extreme-use schedule can be significant, with oil-change intervals as frequent as every 3,000 miles in the severe-use schedule, as opposed to the typical 7,500 in normal use.%26quot;How often do I REALLY need an oil change?3000 miles was the norm years ago on older cars but that is no longer necessary. Look in your owners manual it will tell you in there. My '99 Ford Ranger said change every 5000 miles. My '00 Chevy Blazer said to change every 7500 miles. And my '05 Chevy Colorado says to change at 10,000 miles or at least once a year. No kidding.

Newer cars are built with much tighter tolerances in the engine plus they %26quot;burn%26quot; a lot cleaner with fuel injection as opposed to a carburetor. So the oil stays cleaner longer.

I have followed the owners manual recommended oil change intervals in all my cars over the years and I have never had a problem. I traded the Ranger in with 120,000 miles on it and it still ran like new. I also had a '96 Chevy Beretta that I traded in once with 168,000 miles on it and that car also was still running like new.

Just change the oil when the manual tells you to and you will be all right. How often do I REALLY need an oil change? If you wont to keep your engine in good shape, then have it done between 3000- 3500 miles, you done need to play around when it comes to the engine oil , that's the life of the engine. It keeps the oil pump screen clean and open . look at your engine as you would look at yourself, the oil pump is like your heart , the oil is like your blood , if you take care of the engine like you take care of yourself then it's going to last for a long time. How often do I REALLY need an oil change?1) If your car is under warranty, then whatever the warranty says is the ONLY guideline you should be concerned with.

    2) If your car is not under warranty, then I recommend 5,000 miles. Most manufacturers recommend 7000 miles under normal use, or 3000/3500 for extreme use conditions, and 5,000 is right in between, and (if you do your next change on a 5k or 10K divisor) is incredibly easy to remember.

    3) If you truly believe you use your car in extreme conditions most of the time, THEN stick to the 3,000 (or 3,500) mile oil changes.

    4) if you really want to change your oil absolutely as little as possible, you can send in samples of oil to be tested and be told (based on oil chemistry) when to change your oil -- but this means paying for an oil test every month or two. Here is one place that offer this service:

    http://www.oaitesting.com/prices_automot

Note that doing this will cost about the same as an oil change itself...

    5) Switching to synthetic oil does not mean you can automatically extend your oil change period. Synthetic oils still depend on chemistry additive packages (i.e. the oil bottle says %26quot;service SL%26quot; or SM or whatever), which are intended to be used up in regular driving. How long they last depends on your driving (hence typical versus extreme conditions, which have less to do with the oil and more to do with these additives). How often do I REALLY need an oil change? If you still have it under warranty, do it every 3000 miles or 3 months whichever is sooner.

Otherwise, you can push to 5000 easily (many manuals recommend 5000).

You can also go the for the oil that says you can go up to 5000/10000/etc... miles. How often do I REALLY need an oil change? Its recommended to change it every 3000 miles. Even factories recommend it. Unless you go with synthetics, then that's a whole different story. How often do I REALLY need an oil change?Even if it is. Does anyone know how much a Mini Cooper oil change costs?I checked into this and it is more expensive (~$100) than usual at most places. It seems odd since it is no different than changing a regular oil filter except for the fact that it is a paper filter and the filter casing is metal and part of the car and does not need to be disposed every time.

  • How often do you change oil in Honda?

My sister works at the honda dealership. Both her and the manual says to change the oil in a 6 cyl after 7,000 miles and in a 4 cyl. after 10,000 miles. I have a 2005 4 cyl. and have driven maybe 4500 miles without an oil change. It's at around 58k total miles on the car. It just worries me to go very long. I have been doing this on my Honda Accord for years now (some synthetic, not Mobil 1 EP necessarily). The engine is in great shape (121K miles) and gives me pretty much the same mileage as it did when it was brand new. I have had no engine problems whatsoever. You would need to top up the engine oil every 1.5K miles to ensure that you compensate for evaporation loss. If you want you could change the oil filter at about 4K miles, but that is not really needed.

If you choose to use conventional oil changes, suggest you change oil at about 10K. Also remember to top off your oil at about 1.5k intervals. Whats the cheapest place to do an Oil change for a BMW in Houston?

Whats the cheapest place to do an Oil change for a BMW in Houston? How much does it cost usually? And should I take it to a BMW dealer only or anybody can do it? I usually take my Toyota to Wal-mart and they do the oil change for around $25 bucks. Thanks.Whats the cheapest place to do an Oil change for a BMW in Houston? Most modern BMWs since the late 1990s are designed to use full synthetic motor oils. Typically between 7-9qts of oil per oil change depending on the engine. If you look at prices for synthetic motor oils, you'll realize the oil alone will cost over $40. Oil filters are about $6-$10 each. So, material costs alone will be $50 or more.

BMW dealerships, at least in California, charge about $150 for an oil change. Not sure what it is in Houston, but Houston being a major metro area I would suspect something close to $150.

If you use an independent BMW shop, they might charge about $100 for an oil change. Check out www.bimrs.org to find an independent shop near you.

Lastly, the %26quot;cheapest%26quot; option you have is to do the oil change yourself. The tools required will cost about $100, and I'm adding room for shipping, taxes, etc. It's a one time investment and all future oil changes will only cost about $50-$60 in materials (as stated above).

If you're interested in the DIY option to save some money, check out www.bimmerdiy.com for instructions on how to do it yourself. I've been doing my own BMW maintenance for both of my BMW cars and the oil change only takes about 15min, so it's pretty easy.

Hope that answers your question, but you're not likely to get away with a decent oil change on a BMW for $25. If you go the DIY route, make sure you use a BMW-LongLife approved oil. The off-the-shelf options are:

    Mobil1 0w-40 European Car Formula

    Castrol Syntec 0w-30 European Formula

    Valvoline Synpower 5w-40

There are others, but the above are the ones you'll typically be able to find at your local autoparts store. If you mail order, there are alternatives from Amsoil and others.

You should either do it yourself or have dealer do the oil change. All modern BMW cars use alumium oil pans. It is easy to strip the oil pan drain hole if over torqued. Cost of oil pan replacement is around $1300 (need to lift up the engine to make a room to slide the oil pan out)Whats the cheapest place to do an Oil change for a BMW in Houston?BMW and 'cheapest place' don't quite mix. How much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change?

The sticker on my car (from my last oil change) says to get my next change at 14,732 miles. How many over that can I go that is still safe for my car? I plan on going a couple hundred miles over that before I get my oil changed, but want to make sure it won't cause any damage. How much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change? Most manufacturers recommend an oil change every 3000 miles.

I tend to change mine every 5000, but the most important thing is to make sure to check your oil to make sure it isn't low - old oil won't hurt your engine much, but low oil can destroy it.

When you check the oil, take note of the color - fresh oil is kind of a golden color, while worn out oil starts to get blacker and blacker.

A few hundred miles won't make much difference, but you should defniitely not exceed 5000 unless you want to pay to have your engine rebuilt or replaced. How much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change? If you use an AMSOIL filter with AMSOIL, you can go a good 1 year or 25,000 miles before a change.

but, if you have a new car, you may want to only go 3k miles or so, for the first few times, until the motor is broken in.

it should pay you in a motor that lasts longer.

however, at this point, a hundred miles or so isn't a big problem.

i have 60k miles, and have switched to synthetic.

but i didn't do that right away.

i try to change it every 5-7k miles, but i think that synthetic offers me more leeway. How much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change?3000 is just a recommendation. However, it can be more costly to wait than to pay 30 bucks for an oil change.

I take it that you are not mechanically inclined. If you were, you could wait until the oils viscosity had worn down. This involves checking you oil regularly, knowing what the proper viscosity (lubrication) is and whether or not you are burning oil.

My advice to you is not go more than a thousand max over what the sticker says. How much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change?I bought a 2004 Honda Civic a few years ago and the owner's manual says to change the oil every 5,000 miles, not 3,000 like Jiffy Lube would like you to believe. How much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change?Realistically, you can safely change your car's oil every 4000 to 5000 miles, as long as you have enough oil in your engine. It also depends on your driving habits and where you live. Driving on dusty roads, you will change your oil more frequently. Alot of stop and go driving, every 4000 miles. Check your owners manual. How much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change?I agree with PRDVL. Go with AMSOIL synthetic. You change the oil and filter, then 12,500mi into it, put on a new filter and add another quart of oil. Who has time to do all thos oil changes, much less take it into a service center 4 to 7 times a year or more? How much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change?a couple hundred over is not a big deal. Typicall you want to stay within 1,000 miles of needing an oil change. Some cars say 5,000, other 3,000. My friends BMW goes 15,000, but uses 7 quarts of oil and two filters.

A few hundred you will be fine. How much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change? You can go as far as you need as long as you have enough oil. The stickers just give you a reminder that it needs done, it shouldn't cause any damage, although I generally don't make it a habit of going more than one thousand miles over the recommendedHow much over can I go (in mileage) before really needing an oil change?with only 14k miles, I assume its a new car. Newer cars usually can go longer without needing oil changed. so it depends on if the last oilchange was at 9k or at 11k. most newer cars suggest 5k oil changes, while older ones suggest 3k. If your sticker is a reminder for a 3k, then you def can go over the limit. But in the whole scheme of things, a few hundred miles isn't going to be a big deal. you should be ok.

How many mechanics does it take to do an engine flush and an oil change?

Went to jiffy lube Tuesday had to have an engine flush and oil change on a 95 Beretta. The oil was brown so took it to Jiffy Lube, the mechanics acted like they had never seen a Beretta before there was 4 different people working on it...

Ever since then the car has been overheating. What should I do?How many mechanics does it take to do an engine flush and an oil change?HI

first thing I'd do is check the oil and make sure they put enough back in.... Then check you coolant level. with the motor cold the coolant should be all the way to the top of the radiator (don't check it at the overflow tank) or no more than 1%26quot; from the top.. if its low add coolant.

    good luck

    tim

They probably have never seen a Beretta. These people are clearly %26quot;Morons%26quot;. Do you think or believe that these people are pre-trained or certified ? Upon hiring the manager has these boys sit in front of a tv and watch how oil changes are done period. No Foreman ever trains these boys how to do oil changes or anything else.

I worked for this company and the previous owner Pennzoil sold them for way too many negligent lawsuits. I watched a spanish guy put winshield washer in a ladies power steering unit. I said what are you going to do now? He the manager stated to me that let her take it out, if she returns we will state %26quot;how do we know you didnt do it%26quot; I said I quit. I went over to A dealership 10 mies away and was hired on the spot.

When should I change the oil on my new ford fusion?

After how many miles should I change the oil on my 2008 Ford Fusion? In the maintenance book that came with car it says my first maintenance should be at 7500 miles. Do you agree with this? It seems like 7500 miles is a lot. Are there some precautions I should take? Do you think i need to take it in earlier to get the oil changed? When should I change the oil on my new ford fusion?Joe,

Do what your manual tells you to do, end of story.

Things change over time and the service intervals of your new car's engine are no exception.

Enjoy your new car and if anything use a good quality oil. When should I change the oil on my new ford fusion?Well, my dad taught me to change it every 3000 miles, just like many people do. However, I read an article a couple of years ago (don't know where) that stated that today's engines don't need the oil changed every 3000 miles because of the advancement in the design and cleanliness of them. The engines of 10-20 years ago and beyond, weren't as efficient internally (not fuel economy wise) as today's engines, and, therefore, required that the oil be changed every 3000 miles due to more frictional wear on the oil. If the manual says 7500 miles, then change it every 7500 miles. I, however, still change mine every 3000 miles because that's how I was brought up to do it.When should I change the oil on my new ford fusion? My 2007 Fusion says to have a maintenance every 5,000 miles. However I remember reading something that Ford decided that was too often, and converted to every 7,500.

Just my opinion here, but I think every 3,000 is too often and every 7,500 is not enough. I like my 5,000 mile interval. When should I change the oil on my new ford fusion?ive read the same article as the above guy, but they also proved that wrong, and that seams like alot of mileage for a car and also keep in mind that the manual is assuming your going to be the most courteous driver on the road that never does over the speed limit, so unless your one of the 3 people on the road that does that, i would say 3000 miles for regular oil and 5000max for syntheticWhen should I change the oil on my new ford fusion?About every 4,000 miles but if you only change it every 6,000-8,000 miles it will still work fine just be sure to use high quality oil the off-brand kind sometimes can ruin a car engine. When should I change the oil on my new ford fusion?to 3,000 miles untill you get to 50,000 total miles,

then you can extend to 45000 milesWhen should I change the oil on my new ford fusion? The book is correct. When should I change the oil on my new ford fusion?Well some say every 3000 miles my dad will say 10,000 but I think it should be sooner

  • How much oil can i lose if i forgot to put oil cap on following oil change?

I took my car in for an oil change and they forgot to put my oil cap on. Luckily i didnt drive my car around over the weekend but i did drive to work this morning which is 20 miles away. Oil got all over the underside of my hood and did spill somewhat on the engine. Can any damage be done from this? Also should i just vent at the mechanic? BTW I drive a 2007 Ford Focus. Thanks for the help!!How much oil can i lose if i forgot to put oil cap on following oil change? It will have lost enough oil possibly to be too low for the engine. You need it topped up and a new cap before you run the engine again.

It is also a fire risk until it has been cleaned up proprly and can cause problems with electrics and particularly in the spark plug wells where it can cause damage to the plug caps and cause poor running.

You need to talk to the people that did the oil change about what they are going to do to clear up the mess and provide a cap and oil.How much oil can i lose if i forgot to put oil cap on following oil change?open the hood and check the dipstick. wipe up any splashes off the engine to avoid nasty smells. tell the %26quot;mechanic%26quot; that he forgot to put the cap back on. Id personally not go back. unless it was an honest mistake. put the cap on, and if you have not lost too much oil, go to the shop and tell him you want it topped off for free. or better yet call him and see if you can buy oil at advance auto or something and get him to pay you backHow much oil can i lose if i forgot to put oil cap on following oil change?Unless the oil was two quarts down when you checked it you didn't lose enough to hurt anything.

How much does it cost for a BMW oil change?

    Hello,

I was wondering how much does a oil change cost for a 2004 BMW 325Ci and am I able to take it somewhere other than the BMW dealership? Also how often are you supposed to get a oil change? The car currently has 41k miles on it.

How much does it cost for a BMW oil change?Yes you can take it to other places then the dillership. It costs about $70-90 because they use synthetic oil. You should get an oil change about every 5-7K miles to keep the car in good condition. Just make sure you take it to a good mechanic (not a lube PLACE, they will rip u off). to be on the safe side look at your car's owners manual to see what grade of oil you need.

It averages out, depending on your driving, to around 15,000 miles for an oil change, or every 12 months, whichever comes first.

If you intend to keep the car, it would be a sensible precaution to perform an interim oil change at around 7,500 miles.

Synthetic oil is recommended. Make sure it meets BMW's longlife requirement, in this case LL-04. BMW sells their own branded oil that meets this requirement, but so do others. Just read the bottle carefully or search online first!

You can take the car to the dealer, or a BMW-specific independent (find one near you at bimrs.org), or even do it yourself. Get a quality oil filter, and 7 quarts of oil, and have at it.How much does it cost for a BMW oil change? It depends on where ya take it. Expect to spend a couple of hundred for oil, filter and labor. The mechanic also has to reset the service indicator light. Use Castrol and OEM filter. You don't have to go to the dealer, but go to a service facility which specializes in BMWs.

Don't believe the hype of needing to change the oil every 2500 miles. The service indicator will tell you how often, based on your driving style.

You sound like me. My car is old too. :) Don;t worry about the oil change too much. But that may depend on how cold it gets where you live. as for the transmission flush no worries unles you are getting alot ofslippage while shifting.

hope this helps and happy holidaysHow many miles can I go past a regular oil change? As long as your engine is in good condition, you care and conscientiously drive it and is not subjected to abusive high speeds, then, I would say change oil when you have the budget. I drive a 2007 Hyundai Elantra, and I would guess most of my mileage comes from highway driving. I don't usually drive in hilly areas or on unpaved roads. So is it really necessary for me to get an oil change every 3000 miles? What's a good rule of thumb? How often do I really need to get an oil change?I tell my customers they're okay if they change their oil and oil filters every 3500 to 5000 miles based on which type of vehicle they drive, but the real answer is that you must follow the specifications and maintenance schedule given in your owners' manual. This is important for warranty purposes. Is it really necessary? No. Is it a good rule of thumb? Yeah. That's why that cute, little book is in your glove box.How often do I really need to get an oil change?Your owners manual should outline the specific intervals for your vehicles requirements. If you aren't sure, just stick with the 3 months/3000 mile change interval. After the warranty is expired, you can go to whatever you like. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to go 4-5000 miles on each change but it is better for your engine to stick with the normal interval. What do you think about a Mobile oil change service?

I am doing a survey to see how many people would use this service.I have been to walmart and jiffy lube and had to wait 2 hours to get a oil change. So i decided to reserach this idea and found a company that offer a van, equipment and training for 15,000.With tihis service we will come to you.Our customers would be individuals, business complexes and small fleets. We would offer the same service as jiffy or walmart but the difference

is that WILL COME TO YOU.Saving you time and at your convience. All response are important, thanks for you opinion. What do you think about a Mobile oil change service?there is a vehicle that does that in my town. I think it is great! Like you said, waiting upwards of an hour sucks. I call them and they come to my work with the filters and everything on hand and have it done before I go to lunch. I think it is a great idea and a great opportunity. What do you think about a Mobile oil change service?I do my own oil changes, thank you. Cheaper, and it gets done right. What do you think about a Mobile oil change service?Sounds like a business with a clear market potential. No doubt people would like the convenience.

But it seems to me you could get started for WAY less than $15k.

Set up a commercial account with your local NAPA to buy your filters, schedule your work a day in advance. Stop by NAPA first thing to pick up what you need, and get to work. Nothing to it. If you already have a car and basic hand tools, you could be in business for less than $500.

It seems to me that the key to making money doing this is to minimize the amount of time you spend driving from one job to the next. The key would be to find a way to do as many oil changes at each stop as possible. You might, for example, come up with something where you do one oil change for $29.95 (or whatever), but if you can do three at the same stop, then each one only costs $24.95, etc. Give your customers an incentive to cross market to their co-workers.

How many more miles can I drive before I really need an oil change?

if you dont know which grade to use look in your manual or on american cars it usually says on the oil cap.. so its not neccisary but make sure you get an oil change asap because you dont want anything to go wrong otherwise its pricey. good luckHow many more miles can I drive before I really need an oil change?depends on when it was last changed. if 104,xxx is 3,000 from the last chnage i would say you would be ok.. as long as you don't drive alot on dusty roads. How to change oil in my 1979 Yamaha 1100 Cruiser?

I own a 1979 Yamaha 1100 Special. It runs perfectly but is needing an oil change. I've changed oil in several cars and newer bikes but I'm not sure how to with this old bike, any ideas?

Note: I see one bolt directly under then engine, guessing that is the oil plug but I'm needing to replace the oil filter as well and do not want to take off the wrong thing. How to change oil in my 1979 Yamaha 1100 Cruiser? You guessed correctly for the drain bolt.

The filter is in the front of the engine, just above the oil pan. Look for a large-ish finned cylindrical housing with a large bolt through the middle. Unscrew the bolt and the housing will come off. The filter is inside this housing. Make sure you don't lose the spring and pay attention to which end of the filter goes where. Check the condition of the o-ring between the housing and cranckase and replace it if necessary. How to change oil in my 1979 Yamaha 1100 Cruiser? Also make sure you use 6 point sockets so as not to strip the head of the bolts!!!!!!

What is the avarage price for a Car oil change in the tristate Area?

I have a 94 Honda Accurd and was wondering how much it cost to get an oil change in the tristate area NY. The oil was changed sometime last week by the previous owner but I have used this car ALOT. For that matter does anyone know How often I have to change the oil, or how to know if an oil change is required. Thanks in advance to all. What is the avarage price for a Car oil change in the tristate Area? For a repair shop, there is little profit in the $29.95 oil change. By the time a shop pays its technician, pays for the oil, the filter, and the hazardous waste disposal fees, there’s no money left. This low profit margin is worsened by the extremely competitive “Quick Lube” business, which forces local repair shops to refrain from raising prices, despite rising costs.

This all begs the question: If oil change specials, which range from $15.95 to $29.95, clearly produce very low profits, then why do so many service facilities advertise oil change specials?

The answer is actually very simple: It gets you in the door. Service centers know that once they have your vehicle, they can sell you additional work.

Suggesting additional work is called upselling, and it’s a primary profit tactic of every service facility. Here’s a typical example. You drop your vehicle off for “just an oil change.” Upon completion your service representative smiles and proudly states, “We noticed that your air filter was dirty; so we popped in a new one.” You may think great; what wonderful service!”

What really occurred is that you were casually upsold an air filter. It probably wasn’t needed; it

certainly wasn’t replaced according to any factory recommendation, and you were definitely overcharged for what was most likely a poorly-fitting, aftermarket, inferior air filter.

Here’s a real-life example that occurred recently. This particular vehicle had 54,000 miles on it, and was dropped off at a local shop for “just an oil change.” Upon paying the bill, the customer was handed an estimate for $199 to replace his air filter and top radiator hose. Shocked at the price, he called me.

After review, I found that the air filter suggestion was premature. It didn’t need replacement until the manufacturer’s recommended 60,000-mile service interval. The top hose was also premature. In fact, it did not need replacement at all, despite a very minor problem easily addressed during the factory

    maintenance schedule—at no extra cost.

Check out the aftermarket part prices quoted below (including the unnecessary radiator hose). Compare these to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the factory OEM parts (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

    * Local Shop Aftermarket Air Filter: $32

    * Manufacturer OEM Filter, MSRP: $17

    * Local Shop Aftermarket Top Hose: $36

    * Manufacturer OEM Top Hose, MSRP: $19

Notice that this local shop was doubling the price of the OEM parts with its inferior aftermarket parts.

Now, let’s look at the labor time that was quoted.

    * Local Shop Labor Time: 2.0 @ $60 per hour = $120

    * Manufacturer Labor Time: 0.9 @ $60 per hour = $81

Notice that the shop labor time estimate for the repairs was 2 hours. This is more than twice

the manufacturer’s recommendations (even after calculating manufacturer times against the industry standard multiplier).

Had the local shop abided by the vehicle’s particular maintenance intervals instead of trying to make a quick buck, it should have recommended a 60,000-mile service at the next visit. This would have better served the client, saved him $199, and maintained the vehicle properly. Instead, they lost a client forever!

What needs to be made crystal clear is that this type of price-gouging occurs every day in every type of service facility in one form or another across the automotive service industry.

This type of price-gouging is considered normal!

Your better off just doing it yourself. People that do it for try to get you on so much more. On my website I give you a step by step guide on how to do it. I just bought a 2006 Ford Fusion SEL V6 how many miles should I wait before doing my first oil change I think 3,000 is too long to wait for the first one, and I was also thinking of using all synthetic oil does anyone have any thaughts on this? How many miles should you wait before doing your first oil change? You have a very good point. When I first bought my 2000 Acura Integra Type - R (which was stolen 2 months later :( ) The dealer recommended me to come back so they can change the oil and re-torque my cylinder heads. I guess for a brand new car, this is the time when pistons are making grooves on the cylinder head and some pieces of metals will be filtered but you don't want that floating inside your engine. So I will just give it a change at around 500-750 miles. What you gonna loose? Exactly... Maybe a little life off the engine too..How many miles should you wait before doing your first oil change?it's 3 months or 3,000 milesHow many miles should you wait before doing your first oil change?really, since your car is brand new, newer cars don't need to be changed every 3000. every 5000 for the first 30-40k miles is okay. older the car the more frequently you need to change the oil. technology has improved engine function and ouput to the point where that %26quot;old wives tale%26quot; of 3000 miles is irrelevant.

synthetics are more durable and make the engine last longer than if you were to use conventional oil. it is more expensive but in the long run will be better for your engine.

if you really can't wait 3000 miles then you CAN do it earlier but nearly all mechanics will tell you that you don't need to since it's a newer carHow many miles should you wait before doing your first oil change?the first one should be done anytime between 1 and 3000 that will remove any particles from inside the new engine closer to 1000 is better after all its $30 to keep your new engine healthy do not use synthetic until after 10000 as it is to slippery and wont allow the rings to seat properly after that go for it less friction runs cooler gets better mileageHow many miles should you wait before doing your first oil change?1st oil change at 1000 miles, then at 5000 and every 5000 therafter.

If you choose to use synthetic, you can go every 10,000How many miles should you wait before doing your first oil change? If you drive hard change it at 500 miles

if your an easy driver you can change it at 1500----2000 miles

    They say synthetic is good

But I use different oil...How many miles should you wait before doing your first oil change?just wait for a few hundred thousand miles

its 3000 and it aint to long i know people how only change it every 5000 miles and has done it for 60 something years and never hurt a car doing itHow many miles should you wait before doing your first oil change?I would go with the 1000 mileage as stated by someone earlier. And as far as the 10000 mile before synthetic I don't understand where he got his info. Go buy a new Corvette or most European cars and they are factory filled with synthetic. So if you want to use synthetic go ahead. No truth to the %26quot;too slippery%26quot; theory. But whatever you do make sure you use 5w20. That is the only oil that ford uses on all its new vehicles. Most shops know that but just to be safe make sure you ask about it first before someone ruins your warranty. How many miles should you wait before doing your first oil change?Ford uses a semi synthetic at the factory and any dealer that uses motorcraft oil in their service (some don't)

Ford will actually tell you 5,000 miles (rumors from some dealer techs is Ford plans on making it 7500 for all come 2008) .. most recommend 3,000 miles but since you are paying the note, I say whenever you want to.. be it at 1000 miles... I'm a mechanic and did mine personally at 1500 miles first go around and at 190,000 miles on one truck, the motor was still running perfect and the inside was still clean when I sold it (and with no work done on the engine)

But as the fellow above said, Unless you own a explorer, some new mustangs, or some rangers.... You need 5w20 oil .. Ford has had issues with heavier weight oil causing start up noises on their newer trucks as of late

How do I turn off my oil change light on an 05 impala?

I got my oil changed last week, and my %26quot;change oil%26quot; light still comes on every time I start my car? I tried to open my fuse box to reset and Im having troubles opening that..lol. Help pls.How do I turn off my oil change light on an 05 impala?Read in your owners manual. How do I turn off my oil change light on an 05 impala?Turn ignition key on without starting, within the first 5 seconds, pump the gas pedal (all its travel)at least 3 times. How do I turn off my oil change light on an 05 impala? There are a couple of %26quot;tricks%26quot; that are used to reset that light.. these are not a joke, I own a 00 Grand Prix and an 05 Monte Carlo and they all have the same GM set up.. ok the first one..

Turn the key to the %26quot;On%26quot; position then back to off, do that 3 times and on the 3rd time leave it in the %26quot;On%26quot; position, then depress the gas pedal to the floorboard 3 times. Turn the key back to the %26quot;Off%26quot; position and it should be reset. If that does not work here is the other one that I know..

Turn the ignition on and turn the radio off. Push down the tune nob until settings is displayed on the radio. Push the seek button until you see oil life. Push the next button on the radio until you see the word reset then push the tune nob again. this will reset the oil timer on the car and change oil light should turn off.

What do I have to visually inspect and do that is equivalent of an oil change at the autoshop?

I know a lot of times technicians ignore company protocols in a standard oil change. Twice I had mechanics that forget about capping whatever they uncapped under the hood. One time I've driven the car for a day or two and had a cap still sitting under the hood! These mechanics love to overcharge but their work is pitiful. How do I double check their work to make sure they did everything? What do I have to visually inspect and do that is equivalent of an oil change at the autoshop?Check the tire pressure, and all fluids like power steering, transmission, brake, and clutch if you have a clutch.

By all means check the oil level. They are notorious for overfilling it. That it takes time for the oil to fully drain to the oil pan. Most just add oil until it says it is full without waiting. What do I have to visually inspect and do that is equivalent of an oil change at the autoshop?Um...what? It's an oil change...so there's maybe 1 cap involved. 2 if you have a drop in filter.

The only way to make sure they do %26quot;everything%26quot; is to 1)Know what everything is, and 2)Watch them while they're doing it.

My best advice to you is to change your own oil, otherwise you can't really complain about the work they do when essentially they make no money from a standard oil change (assuming 20-25 bucks). Unless you drive something special (i.e. something they don't see everyday/can't learn anything from) they aren't going to care how good their work is. And if you act like a D.B. they definitely will do a poor job. What do I have to visually inspect and do that is equivalent of an oil change at the autoshop? If you go to walmart tire lube express we check: tire pressure, wipers, oil and transmission fluid, power sterring fluid, test battery, wash windshield, vaccum interior, check air filter and do tread depts. This is called courtsey.

Then we do the lower bay procedure witch includes dropping the oil filter, dumping the oil and greasing up the fittings if there are some. We then torque the drain plug back to factory specs, apply torque seal and check for leaks when the vehicle is started. Also check transfercase and differencial fluid level.

The upperbay procedure is fill the oil, fill washer fluid, start vehicle and top off oil.

The oil changes there start off at $30 so if you can do it yourself you will save alot of money.
