The wear from old oil is nothing compared to what happens when it runs low. So if you do nothing else just topping up the oil will avoid a breakdown (never trust the oil warning light but if it comes on, ****!)
I change the oil about once a year which is always a good feeling
To save money I don't bother changing the oil filter. My theory is if the engine's that bad then a new oil filter won't do any good ;)
Checking the gearbox oil is worth doing on a new car or after repairs in the drivetrain.
So if you miss oil change is nothing, as long as level is enough in the engine. I have never wasted that much oil in my life of driving. Just look at the oil. If it looks good, it probably is good. If it is gummy, smells burnt , stuff like that, it's probably bad. I had a Toyota truck once, '92 with a V-6. I changed the oil about every 15 to 20 thousand miles. It had 367,000 miles when I sold it. I ran PERFECT. No smoke, great power. But, I always kept it full!!!
